BIOTOXICOLOGICAL STUDIES ON COASTAL FISHES OF ORISSA ( Under MMDP)

Principal Investigator: Research Coordinator, OSTC,  Berhampur University, Berhampur-7,

                                       Orissa, India

Sanctioned cost:           INR 359200

Man Power:                  1 Reasearch Associate, 1 Research Fellow

Tenure:                         2 years

Objectives:

  1. To make an accurate inventory of the poisonous and venomous fishes and obtain estimates of their distribution, abundance, diversity along Orissa coast.  This study will throw light on the taxonomy and ecology of medically important coastal / marine fishes.

  2. To screen for toxicity level of poisonous and venomous fishes by bioassay and chemical analysis.

  3. To determine toxins/venoms profile in different species, tissues and organs.

  4. To create general awareness of the antifish poisoning by dissemination of the information to the public health workers as well as the public.

  5. To provide the debate that could be used by future investigators for monitoring and using these fishes for biomedical reagents.

  6. Investigations of poisonous and venomous coastal fishes not only may result in the development of new biochemical resources, but also contributes to the prevention of fish poisoning and injures.  Perhaps the most significant contribution in the development of useful drugs from fish biotoxins (venom / toxin)
